Summer Interns Gain Valuable Experience at Sportsfield

Each summer, Sportsfield Specialties invites talented college students from the region to participate in internships at their Upstate New York office. It is an opportunity for the students to develop practical skills in their areas of interest gleaned from working in Sportsfield's fast-paced corporate environment. We were fortunate to sit down and chat with this year's Summer Interns and learn more about their academic interests, internship duties, and favorite pastimes.

Venice High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District had a problem—their softball and baseball outfields were both shorter than the standard, which led to wayward balls landing in adjacent neighborhoods or parking lots, all located in downtown L.A. The Sportsfield Specialties Solution: conduct a trajectory study based on the venue, athletes, and conditions; and design a barrier netting system to catch the majority of balls exiting the fields. The new netting would become Sportsfield’s tallest system to date.

Baseball and softball season is upon us, and coaches, A.D.s, and groundskeepers are busy preparing athletes and their playing fields for a winning season. Preparing isn’t only about dragging the infields, cleaning the catch basins, and running shuttles, experts at Sportsfield Specialties say it is also about cleaning and conditioning the vinyl protective padding on the field.

In the sports equipment business, Valentine’s Day is not the first holiday that comes to mind in the month of February. Instead, we are focused on Super Bowl Sunday—the impressive rivalries, the post-game tears of joy and heartbreak, and, of course, the chicken wings. This year, however, we’re doing something a little different at Sportsfield Specialties. We have decided to make space for Valentine’s Day by inviting a few people to wax poetic about what they adore about Sportsfield.

Since its beginnings in 1998, Sportsfield Specialties has earned the trust of stadium designers for their vast experience, industry innovations, and commitment to quality, safety, and customer service. So, when Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber announced a multi-year expansion that included construction of several new stadiums and the modernization of existing facilities, it was no surprise that Sportfield Specialties, Inc. had a place on the roster of equipment suppliers.

North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad, a region known for its thriving industrial culture, located between Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point, is getting a new resident. In early October, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc. will join the list of top-name manufacturers doing business in the heart of the Piedmont.

Multi-use and stand-alone athletic venues alike have unique challenges associated with modern sports facilities. For some, the challenge is to find portable equipment that is durable enough to withstand regular mobility for field changes. For others, it is a desire for increased safety without compromising aesthetics or spectator experience. And some are just looking for equipment that functions a little better. Addressing the wide array of needs from venues, at all levels of play, takes active communication between facility managers, end users, and the manufacturers. In fact, communication is the key to innovations in the sports field equipment industry.

Since MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s 2016 recommendation to extend protective netting at league ballparks, Sportsfield Specialties, Inc.’s Ultra Cross® Knotless Baseball Netting has been at the vanguard of barrier netting technology. Today, it is the preferred product of NCAA, MiLB, and MLB clubs across North America. The product’s success is a result of engineered durability, a low-profile design, and exceptional performance, which is certified through 3rd party testing.
