Keep Prison Facilities Secure: An Introduction to Contraband Netting Systems

Huron Valley Women’s Prison, Michigan

In correctional facilities and other high-security environments, stopping the introduction of contraband is a constant battle. From illegal drugs to cell phones and weapons, smuggling methods are becoming more advanced every year. That’s why more and more facilities are turning to contraband netting, also known as prison netting, as a proactive way to stay ahead of the problem.

At Sportsfield Specialties, our netting expertise doesn’t stop at the athletic field. Recently, we completed the installation of a perimeter netting system at Huron Valley Women’s Prison – an important project that helps facility security and reducing the risk of contraband entering secure areas.

What is Contraband Netting?

Contraband netting, also called security netting or prison netting, is a tension netting system installed in high-risk zones – like above yards, between buildings, or along fences to prevent illegal items from being thrown or dropped into secure areas.

These nets are most often placed in parts of the prison where smuggling attempts are most likely, such as recreation yards or rooftop gaps near the perimeter.

How Contraband Netting Works

Contraband netting systems are engineered to create a physical barrier between the outside world and vulnerable areas inside a correctional facility.  Here’s how they keep contraband out:

  • Strategic Placement: Netting is typically installed above fencing, between rooftops, or around outdoor and walkways.  Wherever it’s possible to intercept thrown or drone-delivered contraband before it reaches inmates.

  • Built to Last: Our nets are made from weather-resistant materials like UV-protected nylon or Ultra Cross®, so they hold up over time, even in harsh outdoor conditions.

  • Custom Fit: Every facility is different. Our netting solutions are custom designed to meet site-specific dimensions, height requirements, clearances and mounting needs – whether that’s over an outdoor yard or along the side of a high perimeter fence.

  • Low Visibility, High Impact: While the nets provide real protection, contraband nets are designed to be discreet as possible, so that staff visibility and surveillance lines-of-sight remain clear.

About the Huron Valley Women’s Prison Project

At Huron Valley Women’s Prison, our team engineered and installed a custom contraband netting system based on the facility’s layout and security needs. We worked closely with prison administrators, security professionals, and contractors to ensure the solution met their needs for both performance and appearance.

The result is a reliable security netting system that blends in with its surroundings while making it significantly harder for contraband to reach inmates. It’s a smart, physical layer of defense that supports safer operations and reinforces the facilities commitment to security.
