Rule Change: Double First Base Introduced into High School Baseball Beginning 2027 Season

If you follow high school baseball or have a player, coach, or field to support, there’s rule change on the way. Starting in 2027, all high school baseball games will require the use of a double first base, thanks to a new rule approved by the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations). Let’s break down what this means, why it matters, and how you can get ahead of the change.

What is a Double First Base?

If you’ve ever seen a base at first that’s half white and half orange (or another bright color), you’ve already seen a double first base. This setup is all about improving player safety, especially when runners are sprinting to beat the throw.

Here’s how it works:

  • The white half sits in fair territory and is used by the fielder
  • The colored half sits in foul territory and is used by the runner, especially on force plays
  • On close plays at first, the runner uses the colored side to avoid collisions with the fielder
  • Once the runner is safe and standing on first base, they must use the white side for lead-offs and tags
  • A ball that hits the white part is fair, and one that hits the colored part is foul

There are also other rules that outline when interference or obstruction is called if a player uses the wrong part of the base. These rules are designed to keep players safe while maintaining the flow of the game.

Why is the Rule Changing?

The NFHS wants to make the game safer. Adding the double first base is a proven way to reduce collisions and injuries during close plays at first. This change is part of a group of updates approved by the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee during its annual meeting and will officially take effect for the 2027 season.
