Sportsfield Specialties Announces Padel Court Partnership with Marcos del Pilar

Sportsfield Specialties, the first and only North American Padel Court manufacturer, is pleased and excited to announce an Exclusive Padel Court Sales Consultant Partnership with Marcos del Pilar. Marcos, also known by many as the “Godfather of American Padel” needs no introduction to the Padel community. He is the leading voice and advocate for the sport of Padel in the North America since 2017, is the former President of the United States Padel Association (USPA), is the Co-Founder of the Pro Padel League (PPL), as well as the current Commissioner and was recently named one of the America’s Top 20 Padel Influencers by The Padel State. Marcos is also one of the very few United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Master Professionals in the world and was awarded “Professional of the Year” in 2022. He is an advisor for some of the world’s most exclusive investment groups in the sports industry and he has a very special talent to get people inspired around him with his beginner’s mentality, disruption, creativity, and evolved business vision. Marcos’s now famous quote from his 2023 RacquetX Conference session stating that “The U.S. in not a promise anymore. Padel is here. It has arrived!” could not have summed up the current status of the sport any better. In cultivating their relationship, both Sportsfield Specialties and Marcos realized that they shared a similar vision of the future of Padel in North America and that creating a partnership between them to encourage the growth of the sport by providing the best possible design and construction of the Padel Courts installed would greatly contribute to the overall success of the sport for years to come. Sportsfield Specialties is very aligned with Marcos’s vision of growing the Padel community through an army of ambassadors and will be supporting and promoting his Padel Certification Courses throughout North America. Sportsfield Specialties was recently featured in the April 2024 Issue of Racquet Sports Industry (RSI) Magazine highlighting their entry into the Padel Court market, as well as what has contributed to their success over the last several years in the athletic equipment construction industry. Sportsfield Specialties Celebrates 25 Years of Success

Sportsfield Specialties is celebrating its 25th year in business. Founded in 1998 with the vision of offering the sports industry with a higher level of athletic construction equipment, the company opened their first manufacturing facility in Delhi, NY in 2003. The company now owns and operates another manufacturing facility in Mocksville, NC.

Sportsfield Makes Winning Assist in Major League Soccer Expansion

Since its beginnings in 1998, Sportsfield Specialties has earned the trust of stadium designers for their vast experience, industry innovations, and commitment to quality, safety, and customer service. So, when Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber announced a multi-year expansion that included construction of several new stadiums and the modernization of existing facilities, it was no surprise that Sportfield Specialties, Inc. had a place on the roster of equipment suppliers. Ryan Holt, Stadium Preconstruction Manager for Sportsfield explained that this MLS expansion phase began in 2019 with construction schedules impacted by the Covid-19 shutdown in Spring of 2020. “Once safety measures were addressed, we began finalizing equipment needs with stadium designers,” he said, “It was kind of a blitz for a while.” According to Holt, in two years, Sportsfield has been involved in twelve construction projects related to the MLS expansion. “We were working on 2-3 stadiums at a time—and it’s still going on.” The fast pace and project scale did not intimidate Sportsfield, however. The company is known for their ability to address the field equipment needs of professional sports leagues quickly and successfully. Past examples include Sportsfield’s roles in manufacturing 35’ uprights for 23 NFL stadiums in 2014 after owners voted to increase their heights by 5’. Also, in 2016, Sportsfield played a significant part in engineering and installing large-scale netting systems for MLB after recommendations were made to extend backstop safety barriers down foul lines. For Holt, who has been the point-person on most of the MLS projects, the ongoing demand from the league has kept him focused on one thing—soccer facilities. “That level of engagement means we are in tune with the league’s most current needs and concerns from one venue to the next.” He added that it has allowed Sportsfield and collaborating designers to invest their energy attentively on taking MLS stadiums to the next level and achieve a state-of-the-art standard for venues across North America. “Contemporary venues are constructed for more than their flagship sport,” Holt said. He explained that stadiums are now designed for year-round use to host events from concerts to NCAA football playoffs and high school baseball / softball championships—this means equipment must be removable and easy to handle. Not to mention, MLS’ multi-use stadiums require equipment for more than the sport of soccer. “One of the major contributions Sportsfield has made to this expansion phase has been with our StormGuard® Netting Systems—we’ve installed roughly 6,300 linear feet of the netting to date,” Holt said. The barriers were added to keep overshot balls in the arena and to protect adjacent pedestrian paths, parking lots, and buildings from potential harm from stray balls. Additionally, Sportsfield has installed their AdjustRight® Football Goal Posts in nearly all the project venues. Pro teams donning Sportsfield equipment at their stadiums and practice facilities include Los Angeles FC, Nashville SC, St. Louis City SC, DC United, Austin FC, Columbus Crew, FC Cincinnati, and Louisville City FC. For over 20 years, Sportsfield Specialties has been showing up to the sports construction field with a commitment to innovation, customer service, and quality. It is no wonder they were recruited to assist in MLS’s most recent expansion. And as that number of teams grows, so do opportunities for Sportsfield to do what they do best—engineer high performing field equipment for multi-use athletic venues.

3 Ways Communication Fueled Innovation at Sportsfield

Multi-use and stand-alone athletic venues alike have unique challenges associated with modern sports facilities. For some, the challenge is to find portable equipment that is durable enough to withstand regular mobility for field changes. For others, it is a desire for increased safety without compromising aesthetics or spectator experience. And some are just looking for equipment that functions a little better. Addressing the wide array of needs from venues, at all levels of play, takes active communication between facility managers, end users, and the manufacturers. In fact, communication is the key to innovations in the sports field equipment industry. Here are three examples of how communication between Sportsfield Specialties and leaders on the field helped move the industry forward and meet the needs of modern sports venues. In the early 2000s, conversations about purchasing football goal posts started with a handshake and plans for installation. They were followed months later with a call from venue managers struggling with missing roll pins and out-of-plumb uprights. This common issue was often the result of regular exposure to high winds vibrating the pins from position. Correcting the problem was cumbersome, dangerous, and required attention from several personnel. For David Moxley, Director of Sports Construction Sales at Sportsfield Specialties, listening to the concerns of end users led to the 2006 release of the patented AdjustRight® Football Goal Post. The new engineered design incorporated a rotating internal sleeve with an upright stub on the crossbar (where the upright attaches), which could be loosened, adjusted, and then tightened into position with no roll pins to worry about. Also, the innovation made it possible for only one person to adjust the equipment safely. Increased safety has become a priority for institutions and athletic organizations across North America. Perhaps one of the most high-profile cases was in 2015 when MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred recommended that league stadiums expand protective netting beyond the backstop. The public response was mixed—some embraced the increased safety measures, but others balked at the potentially ruined viewing experience. “There were valid concerns from both parties,” said Kevin DeVantier, Director of Sales (Direct Division), “ballparks wanted to keep fans safe, and fans wanted the open-air feel without an obstructed view.” Those concerns fueled the revolution in netting technology that led to success of products like Ultra Cross® Baseball Netting. The braided and knotless design of Ultra Cross® is constructed from super-durable Dyneema® fiber and requires less material to ensure exceptional spectator protection. Additionally, the low profile 1.2mm twine is certified as having industry leading 95% see-through visibility. The expressed concerns about fan experience also inspired netting manufactures and MLB, along with Sportsfield’s participation, in finding a special green coating to camouflage the net against the playing field. The solution DeVantier said was, “simple, but very effective” in improving fan experience on game day and is used in many professional ballparks throughout North America. Sometimes a simple fix can make a big impact. For example, at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the city’s parks and recreation department struggled with the durability of soccer goal wheel kits at their high-traffic community venue. “It’s probably one of the busiest soccer fields in the country,” explained Alex Fletcher West Sales Manager at Sportsfield Specialties. He said that the goals were being moved several times a day to meet the needs of players of all levels. When San Francisco Parks and Rec reached out to Sportsfield for a solution, they were looking for an alternative to the norm. At the time, Sportsfield only offered wheel kits, but as Fletcher said, “We listened, and more importantly, heard their request and met with designers to come up with ideas.” What came next was a simple, yet highly effective (and popular) solution, soccer goals with aluminum skids welded to the base. “We wouldn’t have added the skiddable feature if the customer didn’t express their needs.” For companies changing the face of sports venue equipment, communication is a crucial piece to their creative process. Providing feedback and collaborative brainstorming fuels innovation, ultimately making venues safer and easier to manage for end users.

In-House Trajectory Study Calls for 90’ Netting at Downtown L.A. Venue

Venice High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District had a problem—their softball and baseball outfields were both shorter than the standard, which led to wayward balls landing in adjacent neighborhoods or parking lots, all located in downtown L.A. The Sportsfield Specialties Solution: conduct a trajectory study based on the venue, athletes, and conditions; and design a barrier netting system to catch the majority of balls exiting the fields. The new netting would become Sportsfield’s tallest system to date.
